How many grafts is a full set of hair?
Because hair restoration goals are different for each patient, the number of grafts needed will vary from person to person. In general, however, it's usually anywhere from 600 grafts (for minimal hair loss) to 3,000 or more grafts (for more extensive hair loss).
How many grafts are needed for a full head? On average you will need between 4000-6000 grafts for a full head hair transplant.
Stage | Stage of hair loss | How many grafts to be transplanted |
---|---|---|
Stage II | The hairline is already receding slowly and/or a receding hairline is appearing | 500 to 1500 grafts |
Stage III | The receding hairline is already pronounced and is moving towards the back of the head | 1500 to 2000 grafts |
Norwood Scale | Number of Grafts | Area |
---|---|---|
2 | 500 – 800 | |
2a | 1400-2200 | Centre |
3 | 1600-2400 | Front and temples |
3 vertex | 1800-2600 | Front and crown |
Although every patient is different, the following generalities can be made about “what can be done” in the AVERAGE totally bald patient. The average patient has ~ 6000 grafts available in his/her donor area for transplantation.
For some perspective, it takes around 5,000 – 6,000 grafts to cover an entirely bald scalp “front to back” with adequate density. Most patients see us before they reach this level of hair loss. Most have thinning isolated to certain areas of the scalp, and this is all we need to address.
As mentioned above, the maximum grafts that can be transplanted by FUT are 4,000, while by FUE, a maximum of 2,000 grafts can be transplanted. Therefore, the hair transplant technique that you select is crucial in determining the number of grafts required.
Which body parts can be used as a donor area? To cover the head of a person who is completely bald, 7000 to 8000 grafts are usually required. But because not enough hair can be extracted from the back of the scalp, doctors extract hair from other parts of the body.
The hair loss area of Grade 7-8 generally requires about 6000 – 7000+ grafts, depending on the hairline design and the size of the transplant area. At any rate, a total of 4000-5000 grafts may be enough to cover the front, middle parts and the vertex with a reasonable hair density.
In many cases, 4000 grafts hair transplant can be suitable for mild hair loss. To put it in a more perceptible context, it is safe to say that 4000 grafts contain 7200 – 8800 hairs.
How many hairs is 2400 grafts?
FU Graft Size | Intact FU Grafts | Split FU Grafts |
---|---|---|
3-hair | 550 | 550 |
4-hair | 200 | 0 |
Total Grafts | 2000 | 2400 |
Total Hairs | 4700 | 4700 |
Answer: 1500 to 1800 should be enough
You may go for 1500-1800 grafts for a reasonable hairline. Please note that there is no standard, one size fits all, graft recommendation. The final number would depend on how much lowering you want and what density. Graft number area × density.

Norwood 3, as we have mentioned, is an early sign of male pattern balding. The patient may notice temporal recession deepens in addition to establishing a frontal tuft. However, this hair loss and thinning hair can be stopped by treatment.
Does the Donor Site Hair Grow Back? With the FUE procedure, healthy hair follicles are strategically removed from the back of the head where hair growth is denser. These cherry-picked follicles are totally removed from the scalp, meaning they will not grow back.
Achieving natural-looking density comes through a second or multiple transplant sessions. The donor area is limited as only 1500-4000 grafts can be harvested safely in single transplant session. Any grafts outside the safe donor zone will yield hairs that are likely to thin and be lost eventually.
Norwood Scale | Required Grafts | Coverage Area |
---|---|---|
2 | 500 to 800 | – |
2a | 1400 to 2100 | Centre |
3 | 1700 to 2400 | Front and Temples |
3 vertex | 1800 to 2700 | Front and Crown |
About six months after a hair transplant session, the transplanted hairs begin to take on a natural appearance and will continue to grow for a lifetime.
A reputable hair clinic offering FUE will usually have a hair graft survival rate of around 60-70%. This is considered to be the industry standard. There is a similar success rate for an older hair transplant technique, Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT).
Answer: You can have many FUE procedures over your life time as long as you keep your total donor hair supply in mind. You can have many FUE procedures over your life time as long as you keep your total donor hair supply in mind.
Two of the most important factors for determining whether you're a good hair transplant candidate are the amount of hair you've already lost and the amount of donor hair you have available to transplant to the thinning areas of your head. This is usually determined based on your specific hair loss classification.
What happens if you don't have enough donor hair for transplant?
The neck is ideal for donor area. However, if the number of hair follicles in this region is insufficient, other parts of the body can be used as a donor area. If the donor area is insufficient, the beard, chin, shoulder area, leg area or arms can be used as donor area.
The Norwood scale helps classify the stages of male pattern baldness on a scale of 1 to 7. People experiencing male pattern baldness tend to lose hair in one of a few specific ways, and the Norwood scale also helps identify the progression of these patterns of hair loss.
How many grafts does it take to fill a crown? Typically, we recommend between 800 -3000 grafts for the crown area. With the average being around 1200 grafts.
How many hairs in a hair graft? Hair does not grow in only single hair groupings, instead most people's hair will grow in groups of 1, 2, 3 or 4 hairs. These groups of hairs are referred to as a graft. On average, each person has 2 hairs in each hair graft.
On average, the donor area of the scalp (located in the back of the scalp) can yield up to 8,000 hair grafts.
Wear Concealers
The most popular hair loss concealers are Toppik and DermMatch. These products improve the appearance of density and can conceal hair loss. Toppik is a magnetically charged hair fiber that attaches to thinning hair follicles, causing the hair follicle to appear longer and fuller.
Those who have no hair from birth.
Because a hair transplant is performed by taking hair follicles from one part of the scalp and transplanting them to another, those who have not had hair since birth are not candidates for surgery.
There really is no limit on the number of procedures a person can have; rather, the limit is on the total number of grafts. Generally, the maximum number of grafts recommended for transplants is about 6,000 grafts for most patients. But the number of grafts done per procedure is up to you!
The hair loss areas generally require about 3000 – 4000+ grafts for a Grade 3 and Grade 3 vertex; and about 3500 – 4500+ grafts for a Grade 4, depending on the hairline design and the size of the transplant area.
Exercise after a hair transplant will raise your blood pressure, which can cause unnecessary bleeding or the transplanted hair to fall out. You should avoid all strenuous exercise for at least 14 days after your surgery to protect your newly grafted scalp.
How much does 4000 grafts cost in Turkey?
Thanks to the popularity of medical tourism in Turkey and the high exchange rates, the cost of 4000 grafts hair transplant in Turkey is around $2,000-3,500.
At HRBR, in order to maintain the quality of your transplant, we believe that the maximum number of grafts that is possible to transplant in one day is roughly 4,000 by FUT or 2,000 by FUE. This equates to approximately 8,000 hairs by FUT or approximately 4,000 hairs by FUE.
The reality is that most patients do not need 5,000 to 6,000 grafts in one sitting. For some perspective, it takes around 5,000 – 6,000 grafts to cover an entirely bald scalp “front to back” with adequate density. Most patients see us before they reach this level of hair loss.
As mentioned above, the maximum grafts that can be transplanted by FUT are 4,000, while by FUE, a maximum of 2,000 grafts can be transplanted. Therefore, the hair transplant technique that you select is crucial in determining the number of grafts required.
Male pattern baldness patients most commonly have procedures with approximately 2,000-grafts. The typical cost nationally for this is $8,000 to $102,000.
