The best methods for sharpening scissors are on diamond or ceramic plates or rods, or fine belt sharpeners like the Work Sharp Original Knife and Tool Sharpener. If you don't have these tools you can use a honing rod or even a piece of hardened steel like a drill bit.
Mail/Post Sharpening Services Range Between $10-30 (not including postage)
Option 1: Professional Sharpening Services
If you have a good pair of scissors, we highly recommend you have them serviced professionally. You can do this for around $30-50 and they should last another year or so.
So make sure you are using the right slot for each tool. With the best scissor sharpeners, you no longer have to toss your go-to pair of scissors in the dustbin once it loses its sharpness and ability to cut smooth. A scissor sharpener is a great product because you don't always have to go for a new pair of scissors.
Option #4: Cut Aluminum Foil
This technique is similar to cutting sandpaper, only you use aluminum foil. Again, this will hone slightly dull scissors, but it won't sharpen scissors with very dull or damaged blades.
As sharpening implies that a new clean edge has been formed on the blade, technically, no cutting kitchen foil will not sharpen your blades. But before you throw away the foil and blades, it should be said that tin foil can extend the life of a dull blade.
Sandpaper can work wonders on blunt scissors, transforming them until they're as good as new. Fold the sandpaper in half so both rough sides are facing outwards. Cut through the sandpaper with full strokes - beginning at the base of the blade and going the whole way up. The sandpaper will slowly sharpen the blade.
How often should you sharpen your scissors? Scissors should be sharpened on average between 6 - 24 months. Several variables will affect this estimate. For example, cutting unwashed dry hair is much harder on scissors than clean wet hair.
Sharpen with Sandpaper
Use high quality, fine-grit sandpaper between #180 and #220 to sharpen your scissors! Fold the sandpaper in half, so both sides are gritted, and cut through the paper using all the blades' edges on your blunt scissors.
Why do hairdresser scissors cost so much?
Made Of Better Materials
This is probably the most important reason why professional shears cost more than regular ones. Expensive shears are made from materials of higher quality, such as Japanese stainless steel, which is often considered to be the best material for professional shears in the world.
AnySharp will work with any other blade with a V shape, as long as it fits. It can even sharpen an axe or any other double bevel tool - but not scissors, which tend to have a single sided bevel!

Reynolds Wrap Aluminum Foil
Using the scissors, cut 10-12 times in full strokes so that the entirety of the blades come into contact with the foil. Check your scissors' sharpness, and if they're not quite strong enough, repeat the process.
Scissors are different as they have two blades. Both are 'only' sharpened on the inside, also called a 'chisel grind'. If you want to sharpen a pair of scissors it is best if you take it apart and use both sides as individual 'knives'. As such sharpening the entire edge will be a lot easier.
All paper products contain minerals that are abrasive and will eventually dull a pair of razor-sharp fabric scissors. Paper (and cardboard) filling and coating contain kaolin clay, titanium oxide, calcium carbonate and talc.
Open the scissors as much as you can and place both blades on the opening of the jar. Now move the scissors just like you would when cutting a piece of paper. Put little pressure when 'cutting' the mason jar and let the glass do the job of sharpening. Repeat the process until the blades are smooth and sharp.
The compact Fiskars® SewSharp™ Sharpener quickly and easily restores scissors back to their original cutting edge. Simply insert a scissors with the slot opening facing up and apply gentle pressure to the blades as you pull the scissors toward you.
Tin Foil - Some tin foil from your kitchen can help you sharpen your blades. Just use your scissors and cut across the tin foil, do this on both sides and the blade should be a lot less dull. For really dull blades, fold the tin foil so it is several layers thick and then cut through.
Use the fabric to oil the entire scissor, on the outside and inside of the blades, being careful on the sharp edges. When you oil the button of the scissor, don't be afraid to really rub the oil in. The more oil you can get into the button, the smoother your scissor will be!
The short answer is, aluminium foil will never sharpen your scissors, but it can certainly improve their performance, because the foil will clean the blades and remove little burs from the cutting edge.
What angle do you sharpen hair scissors?
The best angle to sharpen most hair scissors is between 75 degrees and 80 degrees. This will ensure that the blades are sharp and precise, allowing you to cut hair easily.
Thinning shears are scissors that have one blade with teeth and one blade without. These teeth are little grooves on the blade that will quickly take your hair out in even sections to help alleviate excess weight, soften lines, and blend between sections.
Are Thinning Scissors Bad For Hair? If used incorrectly, thinning shears can do more damage than good. As mentioned, over-thinning the hair or starting too close to the root can leave your client with that spiky, static hair look. It can also damage the ends of the hair, leaving it looking stringy.
It's easy: Simply cut a dryer sheet several times with your scissors. While you're snipping away, the sheet will help sharpen the blades. You can also use the dryer sheet to clean the blades from any lingering grease and grime. (Wash the scissors with soap and water afterwards.)

Option #4: Cut Aluminum Foil
This technique is similar to cutting sandpaper, only you use aluminum foil. Again, this will hone slightly dull scissors, but it won't sharpen scissors with very dull or damaged blades.
Any single-cut flat file with a fine cut will work though, and you can sharpen any pair of scissors in under about one minute. To me, that's empowerment and that's power tool woodworking and sharpening at its zenith.

Cut through the sandpaper with full strokes - beginning at the base of the blade and going the whole way up. The sandpaper will slowly sharpen the blade.
Take a piece of aluminum foil, about 8-10 inches long, and fold it lengthwise multiple times so you have a thick, folded strip of foil. The added layers of the aluminum foil will help sharpen the blades of the scissors multiple times with every cut of the foil.
